CFA Access Scholarship: Cut Your Exam Fee to $400

The CFA Institute Access Scholarship reduces your CFA Program exam registration fee to USD 400, down from $1,140 at the early deadline or $1,490 at the standard deadline for Levels I and II. It is need-based, you apply during one of four windows a year, and — as of scholarships awarded on or after 4 March 2026 — the $400 buys you the Premium registration package, which bundles in the Practice Pack.

That is a real $740 to $1,090 off a single exam. If you're weighing whether the CFA is affordable, this is the single biggest lever you have, and it's badly underused because most candidates don't know the application window closes months before they'd normally think about registering.

The 2027 application windows

The Access Scholarship has four application windows per year, each tied to a specific exam window. You apply for the exam you actually want to take — a scholarship awarded for the May window cannot be moved to August.

Exam window Levels Opens Closes Decision
February 2027 I and III 5 May 2026 25 May 2026 19 June 2026
May 2027 I and II 12 Aug 2026 1 Sept 2026 25 Sept 2026
August 2027 I, II, and III 3 Nov 2026 23 Nov 2026 18 Dec 2026
November 2027 I and II 9 Feb 2027 2 Mar 2027 26 Mar 2027

As of early September 2026, the May 2027 window has just closed. The next one to open is August 2027, on 3 November 2026 — and it's the only window in this cycle that covers all three levels.

Notice how far ahead of the exam these windows sit. The August 2027 application closes in November 2026, roughly nine months before you'd walk into the test center. Candidates who decide in March that they want to take the August exam have already missed it. Put the open date in your calendar now.

Who's eligible

The bar is narrower than most people assume, and the disqualifiers catch a lot of applicants:

  • You must meet the standard CFA Program registration criteria — the same entry requirements as any candidate.
  • You cannot already be registered for an exam. If you've paid for a seat, you're out.
  • You cannot be waiting on results. Applying while your pass/fail is pending gets your application rejected outright. You have to have your result in hand.
  • Only one open application at a time. If you've applied for any CFA Institute scholarship, you wait for the decision before applying for another.
  • Financial need is the key consideration. Applications are reviewed and awarded by CFA Institute, and all decisions are final.

CFA Institute does not publish how many Access Scholarships it awards or what share of applicants get one. If you see a specific acceptance rate quoted on a prep-provider blog, treat it as a guess — there is no primary source behind it. Apply anyway; the application is free and the downside is an email you don't like.

One more rule that trips people up: if you were granted a scholarship after 1 September 2024 and didn't use it, or you were granted scholarships twice and failed the same level on the second attempt, you're ineligible going forward.

The obligations that come with it

An Access Scholarship is not free money with no strings. Three things to understand before you accept one:

You have to use it. If you don't register, don't schedule your appointment, or don't show up on exam day, you become ineligible for future CFA Institute scholarships. Permanently. This is the most expensive mistake in the whole process — a scholarship you sat on costs you every future scholarship.

It's valid for exactly one exam cycle. Awards are non-transferable and cannot be extended past the expiration date in your award email.

You lose the paid deferral option. Candidates registering with a scholarship are not permitted to buy a paid deferral. If life goes sideways, your only route is an emergency deferral, and you have to meet the specified criteria. Regular candidates can pay to push their exam; you can't.

There's also a hard ethics warning attached. Providing knowingly false or misleading information on the application is a violation of the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct, and can trigger a Professional Conduct Program investigation with sanctions up to prohibition from the CFA Program. Report your finances accurately.

How to actually apply

Applications run through CFA Institute's portal at cfai.smapply.io during the open window. Use a desktop or laptop — the application genuinely cannot be completed on a mobile device, which is a surprisingly common reason people miss the deadline while trying to finish it on a phone the night it closes.

You'll get a confirmation email after submitting. If it doesn't arrive, contact CFA Institute support rather than assuming it went through. Decisions land roughly four weeks after the window closes. If you're awarded, the discount is applied automatically at checkout when you register — you don't need to enter a code.

If you don't qualify for Access

Two other CFA Institute scholarships are worth checking:

  • Student Scholarship — reduces the exam registration fee to USD 600 (also Premium package) for students enrolled at a university in the University Affiliation Program. You don't have to be in an affiliated degree program, just at an affiliated school. The window is wide: applications run from 1 September through 15 July, and your university reviews them. Worth checking whether your school participates before you assume it doesn't.
  • Professor Scholarship — for full-time college and university professors, administrators, or department heads teaching a minimum number of credit hours at qualified institutions.

You can only hold one scholarship per exam registration, so pick the one you're most likely to get.

Don't let the savings disappear into prep costs

Here's the part that gets overlooked. Cutting your exam fee from $1,140 to $400 saves you $740 — and then a lot of candidates hand most of that back to a prep provider charging $350 to $1,500 for a course. The CFA Institute cost FAQ puts the full three-level program at USD 3,520 to 4,570 in exam fees depending on whether you register early or standard. Third-party prep can add as much again.

The Practice Pack that now comes bundled with the Premium package is a genuine help — take advantage of it. Beyond that, you don't need a four-figure course to pass Level I. We wrote up the full breakdown of CFA Level 1 costs and fees and a list of the best free CFA study resources if you want to build a budget plan.

Certus exists for exactly this reason: the Duolingo-style way to pass the CFA for $9.58/month billed annually, instead of a $1,500 course. Our Level I prep track covers the full curriculum in short daily sessions, and you can see how the pricing compares to the big providers.

Before you spend anything, find out where you actually stand. Take our free full-length CFA mock exam — no signup, no card, no email. It'll tell you which topics are weak, which is the only sensible input into deciding how much prep you need to buy in the first place.
