CFA Level 1 Exam Format Explained

The CFA Level 1 exam is 180 multiple-choice questions split into two 135-minute sessions, taken on a computer in a single day, with an optional break in the middle. Every question has three answer choices — A, B, or C — and there's no penalty for guessing, so you should never leave a question blank.

That's the one-paragraph version. But if you're planning to take the exam, the details matter: how the two sessions are organized, which topics carry the most weight, how scoring works, and what the day itself feels like. Here's everything, verified against the current 2026 exam cycle.

The basic structure: two sessions, one day

The exam runs about 4 hours and 30 minutes of actual testing, inside a total appointment of roughly 5.5 hours once you count check-in and the break.

  • Session 1: 90 questions, 135 minutes
  • Optional break: about 30 minutes
  • Session 2: 90 questions, 135 minutes

That works out to exactly 90 seconds per question. This is the single most important number to internalize before exam day. Some questions (a definition-recall ethics question) take 20 seconds; others (a multi-step bond pricing calculation) take three minutes. The 90-second average is what makes timed practice essential — you can know the material cold and still run out of clock if you've never rehearsed the pace. That's exactly why we built a free full-length CFA mock exam that mirrors the real timing — no signup, no credit card.

One thing to know about the break: once you end Session 1, you can't go back to those 90 questions. Each session is sealed when it's done.

Question format: all multiple choice, three options

Level 1 is the only level that's entirely standalone multiple-choice questions. (Level 2 moves to vignette-based item sets; Level 3 adds constructed-response essays.) Each Level 1 question is self-contained: a stem, sometimes a short data table, and three answer choices.

Three choices instead of four is good news — a blind guess has a 33% chance. It also shapes how distractors work: the two wrong answers are usually the results of a specific, predictable mistake (using the wrong compounding convention, forgetting to annualize, mixing up FIFO and LIFO effects). Practicing enough questions teaches you to recognize the traps, not just the right answers.

There is no negative marking. Unanswered and wrong are scored identically, so answer everything, even if some are educated guesses in the final minute.

2026 topic weights: where the points actually are

CFA Institute assigns each topic a weight range. For 2026, the Level 1 weights are unchanged from 2025:

Topic Weight
Ethical and Professional Standards 15–20%
Financial Statement Analysis 11–14%
Equity Investments 11–14%
Fixed Income 11–14%
Portfolio Management 8–12%
Alternative Investments 7–10%
Quantitative Methods 6–9%
Economics 6–9%
Corporate Issuers 6–9%
Derivatives 5–8%

Two takeaways. First, Ethics is the heaviest single topic at 15–20% — on a 180-question exam, that's roughly 27 to 36 questions. Candidates who treat Ethics as an afterthought give away the biggest block of points on the exam. Second, the top four topics (Ethics, FSA, Equity, Fixed Income) together account for over half the exam. Weight your study hours accordingly — our CFA Level 1 study guide walks through how to sequence them.

Note that questions aren't grouped by topic in a labeled way on exam day; the sessions mix topics, though CFA Institute distributes them across the two sessions.

How scoring works

CFA Institute doesn't publish a passing score. Instead, the Board of Governors sets a minimum passing score (MPS) after each exam window, and it's never disclosed. Your result comes back as pass/fail along with a score report showing how you performed relative to other candidates and the MPS line by topic area.

For context on difficulty: in 2025, Level 1 pass rates were 45% in February, 43% in August, and 43% in November, against a 10-year average of roughly 40%. First-time candidates do meaningfully better than re-takers — in November 2025, first-timers passed at 49% versus 29% for candidates who had deferred. The lesson: showing up genuinely prepared the first time matters a lot.

One more requirement: you must complete a Practical Skills Module (an online, self-paced module — it's not scored like the exam) before your Level 1 result will be released.

Results arrive roughly five to seven weeks after you take the exam.

Exam day logistics

The exam is computer-based, administered at Prometric test centers. In 2026, Level 1 is offered in four windows: February, May, August, and November.

What you bring is tightly controlled. The only calculators allowed are the Texas Instruments BA II Plus (including the Professional) or the HP 12C. You'll need a valid passport or other accepted ID matching your registration. Scratch work happens on materials the test center provides — no personal notes, phones, or smartwatches in the room.

On cost: as of the 2026 fee structure, CFA Institute eliminated the old one-time enrollment fee, and Level 1 registration runs $1,140 early or $1,490 standard. Registering early saves about $350 — which, worth noting, is more than an entire year of Certus.

How to prepare for this format specifically

Knowing the format changes how you should study. Three format-driven rules:

  1. Practice at 90 seconds per question, always. Untimed practice builds knowledge; timed practice builds a passing score. They are not the same skill.
  2. Front-load Ethics and FSA. They're the two heaviest topics and both reward repeated exposure over cramming.
  3. Take at least one full 180-question mock under real conditions. Two 135-minute sessions back-to-back is a stamina event. The first time you experience hour four should not be on exam day.

Most prep providers charge $350–$1,500 for course access before you can even try a realistic mock. Certus is the Duolingo-style way to pass the CFA — full readings, spaced-repetition flashcards, and adaptive practice from $9.58/month, and the complete prep track covers every topic in the table above.

The best first step is free: take our full-length CFA Level 1 mock exam — real format, real timing, instant topic-by-topic breakdown, no signup required. You'll know exactly where you stand in one afternoon.
