CFA Practical Skills Modules: Which PSM to Pick

You must complete one Practical Skills Module (PSM) at every CFA level, and it has to be finished before your level's results are released. Under CFA Institute's PSM policy, if it isn't done by results day, your exam result is voided: no pass, no fail, and you have to re-register, pay again, and retake that level.

That is a harsh penalty for something that takes 10 to 20 hours. Most candidates who get caught by it didn't find the modules hard. They just forgot about them. Here's what the PSMs are, which ones you can choose at each level, and how to plan your picks across all three levels so you don't paint yourself into a corner.

What a Practical Skills Module actually is

A PSM is a self-paced online course that sits alongside the CFA curriculum but isn't part of the exam. CFA Institute describes each module as a mix of videos, multiple-choice questions, guided practice, and case studies, and estimates 10 to 20 hours per module.

The key facts, all from CFA Institute's PSM page and PSM policy:

  • One PSM per level is required to receive your exam result.
  • You can start any time after you register. Before, during, or after your exam all work.
  • The deadline is your results release date, not your exam date.
  • You can't repeat a module across levels. If you do Python Programming Fundamentals at Level I, you need a different module at Level II.
  • You can switch. Start one, decide you hate it, and move to another. Only one has to be completed.
  • Failing the exam doesn't mean redoing the PSM. Only one is required per level, so a retake at the same level doesn't need a new module.
  • "Done" means submitted. CFA Institute specifically tells candidates to click the "Continue" or "Finish Task" button inside the module so completion registers.

One note on wording: the PSM policy says an incomplete module means your result is voided and you must retest, while one line in CFA Institute's FAQ says only that you "will not receive your exam result that day." Don't bet on the softer reading. Treat the policy as the rule.

Which PSMs are available at each level

CFA Institute publishes the lineup by exam year. For 2026:

Module Level I Level II Level III
Financial Modeling ✓
Python Programming Fundamentals ("Python I") ✓ ✓
Python, Data Science, and AI ("Python II") ✓
Analyst Skills ✓
Portfolio Development and Construction ✓
Pathway-specific module ✓

At Level III, you also get access to one module matched to your pathway: Practical Macro (Portfolio Management), Due Diligence (Private Markets), or Managing Private Wealth Clients (Private Wealth). If you haven't picked a pathway yet, our guide to choosing a CFA Level 3 pathway walks through the options.

For 2027 the structure is nearly identical. Analyst Skills becomes Equity Analyst Skills at Level II, and the Level III macro module is listed as Macro Insights for Investing.

What each module involves

Financial Modeling (Level I). You build a three-statement financial model. If you work in banking, equity research, or corporate finance, or want to, this is the most directly useful module on the list, and it lines up with the financial statement analysis you're already studying for Level I.

Python Programming Fundamentals (Level I or II). You write Python in Jupyter Notebooks for finance-oriented data projects. If you've never coded, expect it to sit at the longer end of the time estimate.

Python, Data Science, and AI (Level II only). The more advanced Python module. CFA Institute describes it as applying machine learning techniques to finance problems, from forecasting EPS changes to sentiment analysis.

Analyst Skills (Level II). Built around the habits of successful equity research analysts. A natural fit for Level II, where equity valuation is a large part of the exam.

Portfolio Development and Construction (Level III). You develop, implement, and manage an institutional portfolio, using lessons from the curriculum plus advanced Excel.

Pathway modules (Level III). Practical Macro covers top-down macro analysis for investment decisions. Due Diligence covers the due diligence process in private equity deals. Managing Private Wealth Clients covers advising high-net-worth clients.

How to plan your picks across all three levels

Because you can't repeat a module, your Level I choice shapes your Level II options. Python I is the only module available at two levels, so it's the one to plan around.

If you want to do both Python modules, take Python I at Level I. Python II is only offered at Level II, so that's your only chance to do them in order.

If you want Financial Modeling, you have to take it at Level I. It isn't offered anywhere else. That leaves Python I, Python II, and Analyst Skills open at Level II.

If you just want the fastest path, pick the module closest to what you already know. A candidate who uses Excel daily will usually get through Financial Modeling faster than through a first-ever Python course, and the reverse is true for someone who codes.

At Level III, your options come down to Portfolio Development and Construction or the module for your pathway. If you've chosen a pathway because it fits your career, the matching module is usually the more interesting one.

When to actually do it

CFA Institute says there's no "best" time, because the material is separate from the exam. We'd push back a little: there's a clearly worst time, which is the last week before results come out.

Here are two sensible approaches:

  1. Right after you register. Knock it out before serious exam prep starts. It's a low-pressure way to build a study habit, and then it's done.
  2. Right after your exam. You have weeks to wait for results anyway. CFA Institute's own guidance is that results arrive 5 to 9 weeks after the exam window closes. That's plenty of time for a 10-to-20-hour module, as long as you start in week one and not week eight.

What doesn't work is doing it during your final review weeks. Every hour spent on a PSM in the month before the exam is an hour not spent on mock exams, and mocks are where marginal points come from.

If you took Level III in August 2026: CFA Institute has scheduled Level III results for October 20, 2026. If your PSM isn't finished and submitted, finish it now. Our guide to when CFA results come out has the full release calendar.

The bottom line

The PSM is the easiest requirement in the CFA Program to satisfy and one of the most expensive to forget. Pick a module that matches your skills or career, plan around the no-repeat rule, and finish it well before results day.

Then spend your real energy on the exam. If you're preparing for Level I, the fastest way to see where you stand is our free full-length CFA mock exam. It's free, needs no signup, and is scored by topic so you know what to fix. When you're ready for structured daily practice, Certus is the Duolingo-style way to pass the CFA, starting at $9.58 a month billed yearly instead of the $350 to $1,500 the big prep providers charge.
